If you can't find it create it product design

Reel-to-reel or open-reel audio tape recording is the form of magnetic tape audio recording in which the recording medium is held on a reel.

Reels are an important aspect of the tapedeck. Not only for listening to your favourite music but also the look of your tapedeck

What do I want to achieve with my research?
I want to realise new designs that refer to the vintage reel design and explore the possibilities of using new materials.

Materials I want to work with are: wood, (plexi) glas, lightweight brushed metal, or even a concrete coating.

I do not own any of these inspiring images that have been used for my research. Special thanx to all design bloggers, photographers and audio lovers.

Spinning hubcaps of classic cars

Classic cars are known for their charismatic forms. Every part is designed in detail. The hubcaps are my source of inspiration for researching new forms for reels.

The alternation / tension between closed and open forms play an important role. The character must radiate both stationary and in motion.

The design proces specs

In use - the supply reel or feed reel containing the tape is mounted on a spindle. The end of the tape is manually pulled out of the reel. Threaded through mechanical guides and a tape head assembly. Attached by friction to the hub of an initially empty take-up reel.

  • Outside reel size 265 mm or 10.1/2 inch
  • Thickness reel mm or inch
  • NAB / Hub size mm or inch
  • Drill holes mm or inch
